UNPUBLISHED CATUVELLAUNI CUNOBELIN

Gold Quarter-Stater.This specimen has features not seen on any other quarters of Cunobelin or any other of his issues. Drag the lens over the coin and you will see that the die cuter has taken care with this particular pair of dies, for example the CA has been cut the exact width as the M so as to fit on the coin (usually a letter may be part missing). You will also see that the muscles on the horse have also been carefully executed.

Other features not seen on any other gold are the two pillars (probably representing to torches in the ground) and also the "winged-face" like "plant" above. I know of 3 all of which have past through our hands and interestingly all found in Kent, this one in Ash.

One possibility is that this unusual type is a commemorative in respect of Amminus, King of Kent c35-38AD as he was the son of Cunobelin
