Gold Staters

by Mike R. Vosper.

In Oct.-Nov. 2000, I was on my usual "round robin" to aquire coinage for our clients. I came across two staters the first new type was pretty obvious being baser the second I noted seemed to look different in some respect. When I returned home I noted in The British Iron-age Coinage book by R. Hobbs (BMC) that this revered design is not recorded, and to clarify this I thought I would do a short paper on these new staters.

1. TOP - Catuvellauni, Tasciovanus TASCIO RICON:-
This type exhibits a base gold surface, it is not plated and is from official dies, moreover The Celtic Coin Index (CCI) at Oxford have seen this specimen and we are in agreement. Currently The CCI and myself do not know of any other examples.

2. Bottom - Coreltauvi, North-East Coast:-
As you can see this coin appears to look strange on the Apollo head (obverse) side, can you see what is different from the normal type??? To help you I've included an Apollo right obverse of normal type below:-

Well did you see what is different?? I think you'll agree that what we have is in fact the Apollo head to the left, the picture below is the coin spun round so that the 'collar' is at the bottom and the leaves point upwards.

I would be very keen to receive any regarding information or suggestions as to throw some light on the subject, or even if you know of any new types.
