The Pobjoy - Britain, family have been associated with fine metalwork since the Middle Ages. The Company was recently granted a Coat of Arms in which the Medieval Popinjay is the central motif. The Popinjay was a painted wooden parrot used in archery contests in the 14th century and the name Pobjoy is derived from this. The Birmingham Mint
The Birmingham Mint - Britain is located in Icknield St. It makes coins for other countries and commemorative medallions. It is the oldest continuously operating mint in this country. It started in 1850 and moved to this site in the 1862 and by 1889 had become the biggest private Mint in the world. Orders for coins came from Russia, Brazil, Mexico and Egypt, amongst others. Today, it still is the biggest private mint in this country.
The Birmingham Mint has been involved in making blanks for the new Euro coins.

In 1764 the Convocational Diet, electing Stanislaus Augustus the King of Poland, saddled him with the duty to reorganize the monetary system and to establish the new Mint - The Polish Mint . The local mints were closed for 80 years and there was not any good local currency in the circulation. On the 10th February, 1766 the mint reform was effected in Poland, the new mint organized in Warsaw at Bielanska Street coined the gold, silver and copper pieces, as well as the medals and orders. It is one of the most modern monetary plants in Europe thanks to its newest fleet of machines and highly skilled staff.
