TRAJAN - Restoration of Augustus

AR Denarius, c107, c18mm, c3.6g.

CAESAR AVGVSTVS - DIVI F PATER PATRIAE Laureate head r. of Augustus./C. L. CAESARES - AVGVSTI F COS DESIG PRINC IVVENT Gaius and Lucius C., togate, standing facing, each holding clipeus virtuti and lance; between their heads, simpulum and lituus.

Not in RIC or RSC. See RIC 56, 208. BMC 90, 536

Stylistically this has been attributed to the restored series of Trajan of AD 107. The portrait features show some correspondence with those of Trajan. This rare variant of the Gaius and Lucius Caesars denarius of Augustus, with the two sacrificial implements on the reverse turned outwardly, not inwardly as usual, and struck in unusually fine style and on broad planchets, is known today in about fifteen specimens.
